Palacio Real de Madrid

Palacio Real de Madrid is the royal palace of Madrid and is also referred to as the east palace. It's the largest royal palace in western Europe. Although it is listed as the king of Spain's official residence, the current king does not live there, but rather directly outside the city.
The site of the palace is located on Bailén Street in downtown Madrid by the Manzanares river. The area that the palace stands in dates back to around the 9th and 10th century. It served for many years as an [[alca, the surrounding area was given the name Magerit, meaning "source of water." It is believed that's what led to the name Madrid. After the fire, construction on the new castle began in 1737, initiated by architect Juan Bautista Sacchetti. Today, the castle is mostly used for state ceremonies.http://www.gomadrid.com/sights/royal-palace.htmlhttp://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187514-c85574/Madrid:Spain:Palacio.Real.De.Madrid.htmlhttp://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/8ec36/
